چکیده

The monomer analog of a common water-soluble charged macromolecule shows surface tilt and cooperative adsorption that would be expected for larger surfactant molecules—the small organic ion behaves as an embryonic surfactant. Yet the organic ion competes with inorganic ions (Na, Mg, etc.) for access to the surface, and therefore its tilt increases with the size of the competing coion. Similar ordering of charged units along a polyelectrolyte chain would be sterically frustrated. This suggests a new contribution to surface energetics when a charged macromolecule adsorbs. Polyelectrolyte Adsorption on Charged Substrate

The behavior of a polyelectrolyte adsorbed on a charged substrate of high-dielectric constant is studied by both Monte-Carlo simulation and analytical methods. It is found that in a low enough ionic strength medium, the adsorption transition is first-order where the substrate surface charge still keeps repulsive. The monomer density at the adsorbed surface is identified as the order parameter. ...

Adsorption of weak polyelectrolytes on charged nanoparticles. Impact of salt valency, pH, and nanoparticle charge density. Monte Carlo simulations.

Complex formation between a weak flexible polyelectrolyte chain and one positively charged nanoparticle in presence of explicit counterions and salt particles is investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. The influence of parameters such as the nanoparticle surface charge density, salt valency, and solution property such as the pH on the chain protonation/deprotonation process and monomer adso...

Adsorption of polyelectrolytes at an oppositely charged surface

We develop a scaling theory of polyelectrolyte adsorption at an oppositely charged surface. At low surface charge densities, the thickness of the adsorbed layer is determined by the balance between electrostatic attraction to the charged surface and chain entropy. At high surface charge densities, it is determined by the balance between electrostatic attraction and short-range monomer-monomer r...

Interaction strength between proteins and polyelectrolyte brushes: a small angle X-ray scattering study.

We present an investigation of β-lactoglobulin adsorption onto spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPBs) by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The SPB consists of a polystyrene core onto which long chains of poly(styrene sulfonate) are grafted. The amount and the distribution of proteins adsorbed in the brush layer at low ionic strength can be derived from SAXS. The analysis of the SAXS data r...

Equilibrium Swelling Study of Cationic Acrylamide-Based Hydrogels: Effect of Synthesis Parameters, and Phase Transition in Polyelectrolyte Solutions

Cationic copolymer gels of acrylamide and [(methacrylamido) Propyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) were synthesized by free radical aqueous solution polymerization. The Taguchi method, a robust experimental design, was employed for the optimization of the synthesis based on the equilibrium swelling capacity of the hydrogels. Based on Taguchi method a standard L16 orthogonal array with fiv...
